FAQ
What age groups participate in Westford Youth Lacrosse?
Westford Youth Lacrosse has programs for Boys and Girls from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Kindergarteners play in an in-town program called FiddleStix. Boys and girls in Grades 1-8 play in a travel league with games against other local towns. Both play in the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse League.
What is FiddleStix?
FiddleStix is an in-town program for boys and girls in Pre-K and Kindergarten. Please see the FiddleStix page for more information.
When is the lacrosse season?
The primary lacrosse season is in the spring. Indoor practices start in March. The game schedule runs from early April through mid/late June. Games are on Sundays, generally in the late morning or afternoon. Most boys and girls teams play an 8 game schedule, plus a possible season-ending jamboree tournament. Most teams practice twice per week. The first game of the season is usually the first Sunday in April.
The Select teams (an optional try-out program for boys in grades 5-8) will have an additional practice per week and games on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings.
WYL also offers some off season clinic style programs in the fall and winter.
Is lacrosse an in-town or travel program?
Due to the smaller size of the program and the number of players compared to traditional in-town programs (like baseball and soccer), Lacrosse is a travel program. Both the boys and girls programs play in the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse league. Most teams play an 8 game regular season schedule against other towns, with 4 home games and 4 away games.
Can my son or daughter play multiple sports?
Yes. Lacrosse games are almost exclusively on Sundays. There are many lacrosse players who play other sports which have games on Saturdays in the spring.
What equipment is required?
No equipment is required for FiddleStix which is an in-town program for Kindergarteners.
Girls in Grades 1-8 will need a regulation girls lacrosse stick, a mouth guard, and goggles.
Boys in Grades 1-8 will need a regulation boys lacrosse stick, helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, and protective cup.
Local sporting goods stores usually offer ‘starter packages’ prior to the season ranging from $150-$200.
How much does it cost?
The Westford Youth Lacrosse registration fees vary between the boys and girls program and can change year to year. The fees will be disclosed when player registration opens, usually in November. The player registration fees are used to cover costs including field permits, league fees, insurance, referee payments, and other expenses.
