Girls Program

Girls Program

Welcome to Westford Youth Girl's Lacrosse!

The WYL Season starts in March and we are excited to begin.  Welcome to the WYL family. We have a great program in Westford and are building a reputation as a strong lacrosse program.  It all starts with a positive attitude, committed coaches and players willing to work hard. We look forward to you joining the WYL family.

The WYL Girls program (all grades) is affiliated with Mass Youth Lacrosse (MYL).  MYL aligns with the development philosophy and the demographics of WYL and will provide the best playing experience for the kids.

MYL is the largest lacrosse organization in Massachusetts and WYL will play in the Northwest region, comprising of many local towns.  MYL is not grade based. It combines grades: Grades 1/2, Grades 3/4, Grades 5/6, and Grades 7/8.

Games are played in early April through mid-June on Sundays.  Games are in-town and away.  Most levels also have 2 practice nights during the week.

Lacrosse is a game that has elements of many different sports – basketball, field hockey, soccer, ice hockey, to name a few.  Stick skills are essential to being an effective lacrosse player and include cradling, shooting, throwing and catching with both hands, and picking up ground balls.

Watch for information on uniform ordering for the 2025 spring season.

Girls can start as young as first grade.  We have four age groups organized by grade.

Grade 1 and 2: Play 7v7 on shortened fields
Grade 3 and 4: Play 8v8 on shortened fields
Grade 5 and 6: Play 12v12 on full field
Grade 7 and 8: Play 12v12 on full field wiith modified checking.

Many girls continue to play lacrosse at the high school level.  There are three teams, freshmen, JV and Varsity at Westford Academy.

The women’s game was first introduced in the U.S. in 1926.  It is a game of skill, technique and tradition. The girl’s game is unique and gender specific; although the boys and girls games involve using a stick, ball and lacrosse net, there are no other similarities.

Excited to get started?  We are.  See you on the field in the spring!

Sincerely,
Michele Troy, Girl's Director, WYL
